How you can help
The hospital beds, therapy rooms and staff at Sowenna are funded by NHS England, however the Sowenna Appeal launched in 2018 to support our aspiration for a state-of-the-art mental health facility - the very best of its kind. Thanks to support from charitable trusts and foundations; the Invictus Trust, Cornish community groups and sports clubs; and generous individuals, we have been able to provide equipment and areas which go above and beyond what the NHS can pay for, including: parental accommodation, therapeutic and sensory gardens, art, music, and cooking facilities; a café, a multipurpose activity barn, and a minibus.
We continue to raise vital funds to maintain and replace the equipment already purchased, and to pay for music tutors, art therapists and personal trainers to come in and support the teaching delivered by Wave Multi Academy Trust. Sowenna’s charitably-funded activity budget is an essential resource for the activity coordinators and occupational therapist at Sowenna who offer an engaging and meaningful activity timetable to support the health, wellbeing and recovery of the young people in our care. For the Sowenna team to have an activity budget which is flexible and accessible is invaluable. It means they can quickly respond to individual needs and replenish ingredients for cooking and baking, and craft materials. It also gives them a budget to take part in seasonal activities at Easter and Christmas which would otherwise not be funded by the NHS to prevent the young people feeling like they’re missing out whilst they’re in hospital and to improve morale on the ward.
